Prof. Dr. H. Nejat GÖYÜNÇ

 He was born in Beşiktaş, Istanbul on November 18, 1925. His father’s name is Numan Rıza and mother’s name is Cemile. His father’s family is from Avanos and mother’s family from Kan village of Ispir, Erzurum. His father died after staying in hospital for four days because of his burns occurring because of an accident when he was working as engine driver in X-ray department in Heybeliada Sanatorium in May in 1927.

He had education in Moda Primary School in 1932-33 education year in the first class of the primary school and in Erzurum Gazi Primary School between 1933 and 1937 from the second class.

He held Erzincan Military High Scool examinations and passed the examination. However, because of the defect in his eye, he wasn’t received to the school. He held examination of free of charge boarding school and booked up for the secondary section of Erzurum High School. Two months later he went to Kars with the information stating he passed the examination. He had education for a year in the secondary section of Kars High School. In his second year he was transferred to Istanbul Haydarpaşa High School. He graduated from department of letters in June in 1943. He had education in free of charge boarding College of Ankara Political Sciences Faculty for a year between 1943 and 1944. He was unsuccessful because he had an average of 55 while the grade 56 was require. He went to History Department of Istanbul University Faculty of Letters. He graduated in 1948.

He joined the army after his graduation. He was reserve officer in Gelibolu. He was discharged on October 31, 1949 and came to Istanbul. He was appointed to the Prime Ministry State Archive as wage facilitator. He performed this task between December 1949 and August 1951. As he had education in free of charge boarding school, he had compulsory service for 12 years. Based on this he applied the Ministry of National Education. Then his profession of teaching started in Mardin on September 21, 1951. He worked as trainee teacher between 1951 and 1952, as co director between 1952 and 1953 and as chief assistant between 1953 and 1954. He married Servet Ayten Ekler on August 16, 1954. They went to Mardin together. 15 days later he received writing form the Ministry of National Education. It was stated in the writing that he was selected to make an investigation in the high schools in the USA for a year with the support of Ford Foundation and was asked whether he would receive this task or not.

He immediately went to Ankara and joined English courses in Turkish-American courses. He went to the USA with a group of 15 teachers on January 23, 1955. His son Armağan Ekrem Göyünç was born on July 30, 1955. On April 1955, he was appointed to Ankara Bahçelievler Deneme High School. He worked as history teacher and codirector in this school between 1955 and 1957.

On October 18, 1956i his daughter Ayşe Nihal Göyünç (Güres) was born. In 1957, he got bored from the monotony of the profession of teaching and he held the examination made by the Ministry of National Education and entitled the right to go to Germany to have education for doctorate according to the law no 1416 in the same year. After four-month-German course of Goethe Institute, he started his doctorate education under the administration of Prof. Dr. Walther Hinz in Göttingen University. He was granted the title of Dr. Phil on February 28, 1962after acceptance of his thesis named “İmad es-Seravi’nin Camiü’l- Hesab’ı, an official accounting manual dated about 1340” and after oral examination. He returned to Turkey in the same year and started to work with Prof. Dr. Tayyip Gökbilgin in History Department Ottoman Institutions Seats of Istanbul University Faculty of Letters as Assistant on August 31, 1962. He became temporary Assistant Professor on December 1, 1966 in the same seat and permanent Assistant Professor in May, 1967. on December 31, 1971 he passed to Hacettepe University Social and Administrative Sciences. He received the title of Professor on March 27, 1973 and returned to Istanbul University History Department on Match 17, 1977. He undertook task in the Prime Ministry State Archives between January 1979 and January 1980. He gave lectures in Boğaziçi University part time between 1980 and 1982. When YÖK Lw cam into effect he became director in Boğaziçi University Institute of Ataturk’s Principles and Revolutions. On July 7, 1983 all his tasks in the Institute were terminated and he was appointed to the History Department of Faculty of Science and Letters of the same university. In October 1983, he was exiled to Malatya Inönü University in accordance with the Article no.7L of YÖK Law. He was given no lecture in 1983-1984 education period and was given only Revolution Lectures in 1984-1985 education period. On June 11, 1985 he was demanded to leave University upon the second application of the Article no.7L of YÖK Law for Selçuk University. On June 12, 1985, he started his duty in S.U. H was appointed to the presidency of History Department of the Faculty of Science and Letters of the same university.

He worked as guest lecturer in Munich University in winter semester and in Bamberg University in summer semester of 1986-1987 education period. He later returned to Selçuk University and continued his studies till December 1922. He gave lectures in Uludağ University Education Faculty in 1993-1994 education period. He continued to give lectures to bachelor degree students in History Department of Uludağ University Faculty of Science and Letters in between 1993 and 1996 and to bachelor degree and master students in Archive Department of Istanbul University Faculty of Letters between 1994 and 1996. He gave lectures to master students in History Department of Uludağ University Faculty of Science and Letters between 1996 and 2001 and to master students of Strategy Branch in Gebze High Technology Institute from he beginning of the year 2000 until his death. He performed the task of presidency of publication committee which handled Armenians in the Ottoman Empire under the protection of THE Speaker of Turkish Parliament. On June 27, 2001, he joined the meeting made for the publication of English and Turkish edition of the related book. He attended many meetings concerning Armenians in the country abroad. He continued his works revealing the country’s interests and the truths. Two days before his death he gave the program about the lectures he would give in 2001-2002 education period to GHTI. He passed away on Sunday on July 01, 2001.
